The Pennsylvania Turnpike crosses the state from the Ohio line to the Delaware River, with the Northeast Extension (I-476) running north from the Philadelphia area toward Scranton. Opened in 1940, it was one of the first long-distance highways of its kind in the US. It’s run by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission.

Rest areas on the Pennsylvania Turnpike are service plazas with fuel, food and restrooms. Most are named after nearby towns or landmarks. Some serve only one direction, so check the side before you plan a stop.

Sideling Hill Service Plaza

Sideling Hill sits on one of the more remote stretches of the turnpike in south-central Pennsylvania, with few services off the road nearby. Unlike most plazas, it serves both directions, which makes it a common meeting point on long drives across the state.

Tolls and Stopping

The Pennsylvania Turnpike uses all-electronic tolling: you pay with E-ZPass or by a bill sent to the vehicle’s owner (toll by plate). Stopping at a service plaza doesn’t change your toll, and you can’t leave the turnpike at a plaza.

The turnpike runs through several mountain tunnels on its mainline. Weather in the mountains can change fast in winter, so it’s worth planning fuel and breaks before the higher sections.

Truck Parking on the Turnpike

Service plazas are where most truck drivers on the turnpike take their breaks, and lots fill up in the evening. Our list marks the plazas with truck parking; the truck parking map shows other options nearby.
