About RestStop Map

Last updated October 27, 2026

RestStop Map answers one question fast: where is the next place to stop? Free, without an account, and built from open data.

Why this site exists

Every long drive has the same moment: you’re tired, the kids need a restroom or your hours are running out – and you don’t know whether the next rest area is 10 miles away or 80, or whether it’s on your side of the highway. Most maps show rest areas as a dot without direction, hours or truck parking. RestStop Map was built to answer that moment in a few seconds.

The site covers rest areas, welcome centers and service plazas, plus the places truck drivers and RVers need: truck stops, truck parking, weigh stations, certified truck scales and RV dump stations. Every stop shows its direction of travel, its exit and the next stop ahead when we have that data.

Who is behind it

RestStop Map is a one-person project by Sinan Cekic, an IT enthusiast from Bad Homburg, Germany. Sinan builds free tools that turn open data into practical answers for everyday problems – for example bike-pump.com, a map of public bike pumps. RestStop Map applies the same idea to the road.

Sinan isn’t a truck driver or a lawyer, and the site doesn’t pretend otherwise. The guides explain rules by quoting and linking the statute, regulation or agency page they come from, so you can check every claim yourself. How we write and check content is described in our editorial policy.

Where the data comes from

Locations come mainly from OpenStreetMap, the open map built by millions of contributors, and are matched with information published by state departments of transportation. We clean, merge and check the data, assign each stop to its road and direction, and calculate distances between stops. The details, licenses and update schedule are on our data sources page.

Open data has gaps: a rest area can close for construction, a truck stop can change its brand. If you spot an error, please report it – corrections usually go live with the next data update.

How the site is funded

RestStop Map is free to use and doesn’t require an account. Running it costs money for the server and the time it takes to keep data current. We plan to cover that with advertising in the future. Ads will be clearly labeled, will never be disguised as rest stop listings, and no business can pay to appear in the data or the rankings.

Privacy by design

The “near me” search uses your location only in your browser to sort stops by distance – it is never sent to our server. Maps and fonts are served from our own domain. Statistics only run if you allow them. Details are in our privacy policy.
