Why Truck Parking Is Hard to Find
There are far more trucks on the road than safe parking spaces, and the shortage is worst near big cities and along busy freight corridors. Federal hours-of-service rules make it harder: after 11 hours of driving, a driver must take a 10-hour break – wherever they are. Federal studies under Jason’s Law have documented the shortage for years.
The result: lots fill up by early evening, and drivers end up on ramps and shoulders. Planning your stop before you run out of hours is the best way to avoid that.
Tips for Finding a Spot
- Plan your break an hour or two early, before the evening rush on the lots.
- Check the next two or three truck parking areas on your route, not just the closest one.
- Respect posted time limits at rest areas – they’re enforced in some states.
- Consider a reserved space at a truck stop for nights near big cities.
Truck Parking vs. Hotels With Truck Parking
Some hotels near interstates have parking for trucks or trailers, which is handy when you want a real bed. They’re not listed here, because spaces are limited and usually need to be booked with the hotel. Call ahead and ask whether a tractor-trailer fits.
