Truck Rest Area or Truck Stop?

People often say truck stop rest area for both, but they’re different. A truck rest area is run by the state, sits right on the interstate and is free – but there’s usually no fuel, no food and a limited number of truck spaces, sometimes with a time limit. A truck stop is a private business off an exit with diesel, food and showers, and often more parking, but you have to leave the highway.

For a 30-minute break, a rest area is the quickest option. For your 10-hour break, a truck stop usually has more spaces and more to offer – if you get there before the lot fills up.

Planning Breaks Around Hours of Service

Federal hours-of-service rules require a 30-minute break after 8 hours of driving and a 10-hour break after 11 hours of driving. The interstate pages list every truck rest stop in order of travel with the distance to the next one, so you can see where you’ll be when your clock runs out – and pick a stop with parking before then.

What Trucker Rest Areas Offer

Most rest areas with truck parking have restrooms open 24 hours, vending machines and lighting; some add picnic areas, pet areas and travel information. Showers are rare at public rest areas – for those, use a truck stop.

On Your Interstate

Each interstate page lists its stops in order of travel for both directions, so you can see what’s ahead before you get there.
