The New Jersey Turnpike runs from the Delaware Memorial Bridge in the south to the approach to the George Washington Bridge in the north, and carries I-95 on its northern part. There are no ordinary rest areas on it: every rest stop on the Jersey Turnpike is a full service area with fuel, food and restrooms, run for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority.

The turnpike’s service areas are named after people connected to New Jersey – from Clara Barton and Walt Whitman to Thomas Edison and Vince Lombardi. Most serve only one direction, so check the side before you plan a stop. The list below shows the NJ Turnpike rest stop locations in order of travel.

Looking for the Jon Bon Jovi or James Gandolfini rest stop? Those aren’t on the Jersey Turnpike – they’re service areas on the Garden State Parkway, the state’s other big toll road, also run by the Turnpike Authority.

Vince Lombardi Rest Stop

The Vince Lombardi Service Area is the northernmost rest stop on the NJ Turnpike, close to the approach to the George Washington Bridge and New York City. It’s the last chance for fuel and food before the city – and the first stop after it – which makes it one of the busiest service areas on the road.

Many drivers know it as the Vince Lombardi truck stop: it has a truck parking area, and trucks often stop here before deliveries into New York. Spaces fill up at night, so arrive early or plan a backup.

Who the Service Areas Are Named After

Instead of numbers, each New Jersey Turnpike service area carries the name of a person tied to the state: writers like Walt Whitman, Joyce Kilmer and James Fenimore Cooper, the inventor Thomas Edison, Presidents Grover Cleveland and Woodrow Wilson, the Red Cross founder Clara Barton, the Revolutionary War heroine Molly Pitcher, and Vince Lombardi, who began his coaching career at a high school in Englewood, New Jersey.

That makes the names handy landmarks – drivers say “meet at Molly Pitcher” rather than giving a milepost.

Good to Know Before You Stop

The turnpike is a closed toll system: you pay by the distance between the entry and exit interchange, and stopping at a service area doesn’t change your toll. You can’t leave the road at a service area, so if you need something specific, plan the stop that has it.

On its busiest section the turnpike splits into inner car-only lanes and outer lanes open to all vehicles. Trucks, buses and RVs must use the outer lanes there – watch the signs early so you don’t miss a service area exit on your side.
