Rest stops on every US interstate, in order of travel for both directions – with exits, the distance to the next stop and the longest gaps.

Every interstate page lists its rest areas, welcome centers and service plazas in order of travel – northbound and southbound, or eastbound and westbound – with the exit and the distance to the next stop. Browse rest stops by interstate below to see the ones on your route.

Rest areas on a divided highway usually serve one direction only, which is why we always list the two directions separately. Long gaps between rest areas on interstates are marked, so you can plan a break before a stretch with nowhere to stop.

Distances are between consecutive stops in the same direction: road miles by mile marker within a state, straight-line where a mile marker is missing or across a state line.

North–South Interstates

Odd numbers, from the West Coast (I-5) to the East Coast (I-95). Northbound and southbound stops are listed separately.

East–West Interstates

Even numbers, from the southern border (I-10) to the north (I-90, I-94). Eastbound and westbound stops are listed separately.

Interstate Rest Stops FAQ

How do I find rest stops on my interstate?

Open the interstate below and pick your direction of travel. You’ll see every rest area, welcome center and service plaza in order, with the exit and the distance to the next stop. On the road, Find rest stops near me shows the ones ahead of you.

Why are rest areas listed by direction?

Most interstate rest areas sit on one side of a divided highway and serve only that direction. A northbound rest area can’t be reached when you’re driving south, so every interstate page lists the two directions separately.

How far apart are interstate rest areas?

It varies by state and route. Federal guidance once aimed for roughly one rest area per hour of driving, but many states have closed rest areas since, and gaps of 60 miles or more are common in the West. Each interstate page shows the distance between all stops and its longest gaps.

What do odd and even interstate numbers mean?

Odd-numbered interstates such as I-95 run north–south, and the numbers grow from west to east. Even-numbered interstates such as I-80 run east–west, with numbers growing from south to north. Three-digit interstates are spurs or loops of a main route.

Are interstate rest areas open 24 hours?

Most are open 24 hours, 7 days a week, but some close overnight, seasonally or for construction. Each rest stop’s page shows the hours we know of.
