The Garden State Parkway runs the length of New Jersey, from Cape May in the south to the New York state line near Montvale. Like the New Jersey Turnpike, it’s operated by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, and its rest stops are service areas with food, fuel and restrooms.

In 2021 the Turnpike Authority renamed nine Parkway service areas after members of the New Jersey Hall of Fame. Many drivers still use the old names – Cheesequake, Montvale, Vauxhall, Monmouth – so we show both.

Cheesequake Rest Area (Jon Bon Jovi Service Area)

The Cheesequake rest area – officially the Jon Bon Jovi Service Area since the 2021 renaming – is one of the best-known stops on the Garden State Parkway. It lies in Old Bridge Township near Cheesequake State Park, between the shore and North Jersey, which makes it a natural break on summer trips to and from the beaches.

If you’re searching for the Cheesequake rest stop on the Garden State Parkway: it’s the same place, just with a new name on the signs.

Old and New Service Area Names

The nine renamed service areas, with their former names: Montvale → James Gandolfini, Brookdale North → Larry Doby, Brookdale South → Connie Chung, Vauxhall → Whitney Houston, Cheesequake → Jon Bon Jovi, Monmouth → Judy Blume, Forked River → Celia Cruz, Atlantic → Frank Sinatra, and Ocean View → Toni Morrison, according to the New Jersey Turnpike Authority.

Our list uses the names as they’re mapped today; signs and navigation apps may still show the old ones for a while.

Trucks on the Garden State Parkway

Large trucks are restricted on the northern part of the Parkway, so most truck traffic between South Jersey and New York uses the New Jersey Turnpike instead. If you drive a truck, check the restrictions before you plan a Parkway service area as your stop, and see our New Jersey Turnpike service areas.
