Key takeaways
- We rank rest areas by how many amenities they have in our data – an objective starting point, not a beauty contest.
- The best-equipped stops are often welcome centers near state lines.
- Truck and RV parking, pet areas and picnic areas separate good rest areas from basic ones.
- Use the map filters to find stops with exactly what you need on your route.

What makes a great rest stop?
Ask ten drivers and you’ll get ten answers, but a few things come up again and again: clean restrooms open around the clock, enough parking – including for trucks and RVs – a place to walk the dog, picnic tables in the shade, and information about the road ahead. Some rest areas add something special: a view, a museum or local history.
Views are hard to measure. Amenities aren’t. So we ranked the rest areas in our data by the number of amenities they have – restrooms, truck parking, picnic areas, pet areas, dump stations, EV charging and more.
The best-equipped rest areas in our data
These rest areas and welcome centers have the most amenities on record, one per state. The ranking is based on our data from OpenStreetMap and state DOTs – if a rest area’s amenities aren’t fully mapped, it can be missing here.

Why welcome centers often win
Welcome centers are a state’s front door, so states invest in them: bigger buildings, staff during the day, travel information, often vending and Wi-Fi, and generous parking. If you can time your break for a state line, the welcome center is usually a good bet.
Rest areas worth a stop for the view
Some rest areas are destinations in themselves – overlooks in the mountains, rest areas built on historic sites, or stops with walking trails. We’re collecting verified information for these. In the meantime, our state pages list every rest area with its amenities, and the detail pages note anything special we know about.
How to find a great rest stop on your route
- Open the rest stop map and pick your area or use “Near me”.
- Use the “Must have” filters – restrooms, truck parking, pet area, picnic area, open 24h.
- Check the direction: on divided highways, most rest areas serve one side only.
- Open the rest area’s page for details and the next stop ahead.
